I recently had the pleasure of photographing the engagement session for Sophie and Kris in advance of their wedding later this year. Their nuptials are to be at Rudding Park so we decided to to explore the grounds there for our engagement photoshoot!
We shot this at the end of April, which meant we managed to find a stunning area of woodland filled to the brim with spring-time bluebell flowers – the perfect backdrop to our session. As always with the English weather, it can be unpredictable. While the heaviest rain held off for the most part, we did catch the lighter showers and some pretty strong winds! Sophie and Kris however were prepared to brave the elements and as a result we got a beautiful set of images to show from their session.
I approach my engagement photoshoots in exactly the same way I do bride and groom portraiture on the wedding day – essentially a walk to somewhere secluded and a good chat. Shoots may take place anywhere – perhaps a nearby field, or in this case a forest with nice light. The photos are simply a bi-product of this little wander. If it feels right to sit or lean on something, if it’s natural, then we might do that too. Nothing too over the top, no piggy-backing or mock proposals, just relaxed and elegant images.
As much as the aim is always to come away with some stunning images of the couple, these shoots ultimately allow us to get used to working together. They also help a lot of couples overcome fears they may have being in front of the camera. This ultimately will really benefit the quality of the portraits on your wedding day.
