I recently did some food photography of a special steak experience menu for Blackhouse in Leeds, for a fantastic online magazine and review site – Leeds List. As one of the premium steak restaurants in the city of Leeds, I couldn’t wait to come and shoot their menu as I knew that not only would the food be incredible (and I would definitely enjoy having a taste!) but it would be served impeccably too. As you’ll see from the mouthwatering images I came away with, I definitely wasn’t disappointed!
It can often be a while after shooting commercial photographs before the content comes out to the public and until that point I’ve got to keep it under wraps in order not to spoil the surprise. This set of images was shot and released pretty quickly, so I’m able to share it now. As always, I’ll give some behind-the-scenes info to explain how the shots were created.
Blackhouse does have a great indoor seating area, however for this shoot I opted to set up in their conservatory at the rear of the restaurant. It’s light and bright with lots of space for me to move around and get into position as I work. As it was a lovely clear day, there was fantastic directional light coming through the conservatory windows. I worked mainly with that as my main light source and one of my Elinchrom D-lite strobes set up with a small octobox. This provided some rim-lighting when necessary to make the dishes step out from the background.
It was so important with this shoot, to give focus to the quality of the meat. As a restaurant with a huge reputation for the best cuts available, it was imperative to really show how incredible they were.
I always find photographing food fascinating. You’re responsible for not just making the food itself look fantastic, but also to give an idea of the atmosphere and calibre of the actual restaurant. It means I have to focus on a multitude of other elements while I’m shooting. For example; the background in my shots, the accompanying drinks or side orders and even table condiments/cutlery. I can then ensure the dish is styled and presented toward the camera in the most mouth-watering way possible.
